Emergency medicine services at North Shore Medical Center include adult and pediatric emergency departments on the NSMC Salem Hospital campus, and an adult emergency department at NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn. Children, adolescents and young adults are cared for in our dedicated pediatric emergency department. Enter through the main Emergency Department doors and you will be buzzed in to the separate pediatric emergency department and waiting area.

Why some patients are seen before others

We strive to see all patients as promptly as possible. However, be aware that a seriously ill or critically injured patient will be seen ahead of others, due to the serious nature of their condition. The process of determining which patients are in the most critical condition and must be seen promptly is known as triage.

Level Three Trauma Center


NSMC has been certified a Level III Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. Level III recognizes our trauma center's ability to provide optimal care for critically injured patients. Learn more about our Trauma Center

Stroke Center

North Shore Medical Center is a designated Stroke Center, which means our emergency departments are able to rapidly diagnosis and treat stroke patients. NSMC Salem Hospital has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke (GWTG–­Stroke) Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. NSMC Union also holds a Gold Plus status.
