Put your gift to work where it’s needed most by giving to the NSMCfund. This pool of unrestricted support helps NSMC further innovations in healthcare delivery, purchase new equipment and technology, and augment programs in patient care and teaching. When you give to the NSMCfund, you’ll help ensure that NSMC will be there whenever you, your family, or your neighbors need us.
Louise Spiess will always be a woman ahead of her time to her family, ably balancing a career as a nurse and educator with the demands of raising four children. As a tribute to her accomplishments and to inspire the next generation of nurses, the Spiess family made a gift to name the nursing station in the new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at NSMC Salem Hospital in Louise’s honor.
“NSMC Salem Hospital plays a critically important role in our community, and the ICU serves as the very heart of the hospital,” says Gary Spiess, Louise’s son and former chairman of the NSMC Board of Trustees.
Louise began her nursing education in 1937 but delayed finishing it to raise her family. In 1976, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Salem State College and became an assistant instructor of nursing at the Salem Hospital School of Nursing.
“Mom has always been a role model for all of us,” says Louise’s daughter, Barbara Miller, R.N., an emergency room nurse at NSMC Union Hospital. “We couldn’t imagine a better way to honor her.”
