Building A Healthier North Shore

Construction by the Numbers

Our plan for a Healthier North Shore includes several significant construction projects on the NSMC Salem Hospital campus. Below is a look at the new spaces “by the numbers.”

New construction on the back side of the Salem Hospital campus includes:

  • 118,000 square feet of new space
  • New, 64,000 square foot Emergency Department serving adults and children
    • 55 private patient bays, including three trauma bays
    • 10 observation bays
    • Exclusive pediatric emergency care space
    • Designated treatment areas for mental health patients
  • A state-of-the-art 24-bed medical/surgical inpatient floor
    • Six private rooms dedicated to cancer patients and their families
    • All private rooms
    • An additional "shelled" floor for future expansion

At the same time, we’ll be renovating the former Spaulding North Shore building to house 90 behavioral health beds to serve children, adults and seniors. This plan adds 26 mental health beds to meet a pressing need in our community.

  • 137,000 square feet of renovated space
    • 1st Floor – Emergency Department
    • 2nd Floor – 30 pediatric mental health beds
    • 3rd Floor – 30 geriatric mental health beds
    • 4th Floor – 30 adult mental health beds
    • 5th Floor – Shelled for an additional 30 adult mental health beds in future

At the end of construction, our two campuses will merge into one, providing a deeper level of emergency, specialty, inpatient and mental health care than ever before.
