Advanced Breast Health Care in the North Shore

Debra Gentile, R.T.R.(M), the Breast Health Navigator at North Shore Medical Center (NSMC), says that getting a yearly mammogram is the single most effective method for detecting breast cancer early. That’s also when it is most treatable.

Here are a few tips Gentile shared about breast cancer prevention:

Know Your Breasts –

Monthly self breast exams are critical. If you are familiar with your breasts, you will be able to detect whether there has been a change in their size, shape or color.  You will also notice any swelling, redness or change of the nipple. You should call your doctor right away if you see any of these changes.

Be Active –

A healthy lifestyle is the first step in the prevention of breast cancer. Make sure you are getting plenty of exercise and that you’re at a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese, especially after menopause, increases your risk of breast cancer.  

Get a Mammogram –

Starting at the age of 40, schedule your mammogram annually. This exam is used to find and diagnose breast cancer early.  Mammograms can detect breast cancer and show changes in the breast even years before you or your doctor can feel them. Tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, can result in better detection and greater peace of mind.

Take action! One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Live a healthy lifestyle and take the steps in preventing the disease.
