NSMC News Releases

NSMC earns three major quality awards
2/22/2010

While Congress debates whether healthcare reform will control healthcare costs, North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) is earning high marks for demonstrating exceptional health care quality and value. The hospital was recently honored with three major awards:

NSMC Union Hospital was named a 2009 Leapfrog Top Hospital, based on results from The Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The survey (found here) is the only national, public comparison of hospitals on key issues including mortality rates for certain common procedures, infection rates, safety practices, cost, and measures of efficiency.

"We are honored to be one of the 45 best hospitals in focusing on national standards for patient safety and quality," says Mitchell Rein, M.D., chief medical officer at North Shore Medical Center. "Hospital leadership has made patient safety in all of our facilities a top priority and all safety and quality protocols are in place across our system. While there is still work to be done, our Leapfrog ranking demonstrates our commitment to providing the safest, most efficient care possible for our patients."

NSMC has also been named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® for cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters. NSMC is the only North Shore hospital that offers a comprehensive cardiac service including angioplasty and open heart surgery, and the only one to receive this honor.

“NSMC’s cardiac program saves lives in a way no other North Shore hospital can,” said David Roberts, MD, FSCAI, FACC, Chief of Cardiology at NSMC. “This award recognizes that vital role and how hard we have worked to do it well. It’s a great honor.”

American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) recognized NSMC as one of 25 hospitals in the United States that have achieved exemplary outcomes for surgical patient care. As a participant in ACS NSQIP, North Shore Medical Center is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that directs patient safety and the quality of surgical care improvements.

The ACS NSQIP recognition program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving exemplary outcome performances related to patient management in five clinical areas: DVT (deep vein thrombosis, thrombophlebitis and pulmonary embolism); cardiac incidents (cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction); Pneumonia; SSI (surgical site infections); and urinary tract infection. The 25 hospitals commended achieved the distinction of attaining exemplary results in two or more of the five areas listed above.
