NSMC Physicians Receive Awards

The medical staff of the North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) honored Edgar Y. Oppenheimer, M.D., and Howard Waldman, M.D. Ph. D., with the 2012 Physician of Excellence Award and Frederick O. Buckley, Jr., M.D., with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. The Physician of Excellence Award is considered the highest honor among NSMC’s medical staff and recognizes physicians who have made outstanding contributions to NSMC, the medical profession and the community. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a staff member who has contributed substantially to the goals and ideals of his/her clinical department and NSMC while demonstrating a commitment to excellence and professionalism in his/her chosen specialty.

Board certified in pediatrics and child neurology, Dr. Oppenheimer, is chief of pediatric neurologyat MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center. He was selected by his peers for his dedication to his patients and for his commitment to family-centered care.

He earned his medical degree from University of Cape Town Medical School in Cape Town, South Africa, and completed residencies at Red Cross Children’s Hospital in South Africa and the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed a fellowship in pediatric neurology at Boston City Hospital.

Dr. Oppenheimer is also an associate physician in neurology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children and an associate clinical professor in neurology at Boston University School of Medicine. A resident of Burlington, he has been married for 37 years and has three children and five grandchildren.

Dr. Waldman, an interventional cardiologist, is medical director of the NSMC Heart Center cardiac catheterization laboratory and the NSMC Heart and Wellness Center, and practices at North Shore Cardiovascular Associates. He was selected to receive this award to honor his clinical excellence and his leadership skills in helping to found and build the NSMC Heart Center.

Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Waldman received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed his residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He then completed a fellowship in cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He is a clinical associate in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and is an instructor at Harvard University Medical School. Dr. Waldman is married and lives in Swampscott.

Frederick O. Buckley, Jr., M.D., was the medical director of NSMC’s surgical weight management program and a pioneer in bringing surgical weight loss procedures to the North Shore. NSMC’s program has treated more than 1200 patients since 1999, and has been recognized by the American College of Surgeon’s Bariatric Surgery Center Network as a Level 1A program, their highest designation based on patient quality and volume statistics.

Board certified in general surgery, Dr. Buckley recently retired from active clinical practice after 33 years. He remains a member of the medical staff and is in practice with Surgical Specialists of the North Shore and Mass General/North Shore Surgery. He is a clinical associate at Massachusetts General Hospital and was chief of general surgery at NSMC Salem Hospital from 1994 to 2005. Dr. Buckley is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.

A resident of Swampscott, Dr. Buckley is married and has three children.
