(2015 Award Recipients)

Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Award recipients:

Parag Mathur, M.D., a board certified anesthesiologist with the NSMC/MGH Department of Anesthesiology who has been on the staff at NSMC since 2011. He is currently the clinical site director for anesthesiology at NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He is a graduate of the Mayo Medical School and completed his anesthesiology residency at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He resides in Winchester.

Wilfred Lewis, M.D., a board certified anesthesiologist who currently serves as vice chair of the department of anesthesia who has been in practice for 15 years. A graduate of St. John's Medical College in Bangalore, India, he completed his residency and fellowship in cardiac anesthesia and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and was a clinical assistant professor in anesthesia at Yale University School of Medicine before moving to the North Shore. He resides in Middleton.

Leon Remis, M.D., a board certified ophthalmologist who has been on the staff at NSMC for 35 years. He graduated from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency at The Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He resides in Swampscott.

Benjamin Schwartz, M.D., a board certified orthopedic surgeon who attended the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Boston Medical Center in 2007 and performed an additional year of fellowship training in adult reconstruction at the Anderson Orthopedic Institute in Alexandria, VA. He specializes in primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery. He resides in Beverly.

Sheldon Sevinor, M.D., a diplomat of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery who attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his internship and general surgery residency at Brown University-Rhode Island Hospital and completed his plastic surgery training at University of Florida-Jacksonville Hospitals, where he was chief resident. He has been with NSMC for 38 years and has been referenced in national and international media outlets explaining the intricacies and innovations of plastic surgery.

Mark LaSpina, D.O., a board certified urologist who has been on the staff at NSMC for six years. Originally from Merrimack Valley, he is a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He began his residency in general surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and completed his urology residency at the State University of New York in Syracuse, NY. He resides in Georgetown.

Terence Doorly, M.D., a board certified neurosurgeon at North Shore Physicians Group Neurosurgery and Spine who has been on the staff at NSMC for 23 years. He is a graduate of the University of Dublin, Trinity College School of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. He resides Marblehead.

Michael Reich, M.D., is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and member of North Shore Physicians Group who has been on the staff at NSMC for 17 years. He graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and completed an obstetrics-gynecology residency at the University of Cincinnati. He resides in Danvers.

“These surgeons set the bar for exemplary work,” said Marc Rubin, M.D., NSMC Chair of Surgery. “We are fortunate to have such skilled surgical leaders here at NSMC, these are physicians that know how to teach by example, motivate and empower others to do their best as well.”

“Our nurses and surgical technicians are nothing short of spectacular and are critical components to our surgical team,” said Dr. Rubin. “They give 110 percent of themselves day in and day out to improve the lives of our patients and their families.”

Department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient:

William Kastrinakis, M.D., was honored with the 2015 Department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Award. The recipient of this award is selected by the Massachusetts General Hospital surgical residents who complete training rotations at NSMC’s Salem hospitals. They nominated the surgeon whose mentorship, teaching excellence and professionalism made the greatest positive impact during their time at NSMC. Dr. Kastrinakis is a board certified surgeon who graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1990 and completed his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1997. Today he is chief of general surgery at North Shore Medical Center. He resides in Beverly.
