Bone Density Testing
Bone density testing is the primary way physicians diagnosis and treat bone loss in males and females. Men can experience bone loss due to various risk factors, such as long term use of steroids or other medications; chronic liver or kidney disease, as well as other conditions associated with low bone density; sedentary lifestyle; nutritional deficiencies due to gastric or bowel resection surgery; and small body frame size. Women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass in the first five to seven years after menopause.
During a bone density test, a technologist calculates the density of your bones using an X-ray scan. This important, painless test can help determine if you are at risk for bone breakage
