Special Care Nursery Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Some of North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) Salem Hospital’s tiniest patients were invited back to the hospital for a festive, Halloween-themed reunion to celebrate their miraculous births and recoveries at the Special Care Nursery. More than 100 infants and toddlers attended and reunited with hospital nurses, therapists, and physicians.

This policy is part of a Partners-wide initiative to manage healthcare costs for everyone, as well as to conserve natural resources. As you may have heard in the news, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) are currently investigating infections related to contaminated medications which were produced at New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Massachusetts (NECC). The contaminated medications have been linked to a nationwide outbreak of meningitis, a serious health condition. They were recalled across the United States on September 25, 2012.

In early November, Belgassem Ali, a 22-year-old Libyan freedom fighter, suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen during a skirmish with Moammar Gaddafi loyalists. Ali is now one of 22 injured Libyan fighters currently receiving care at Spaulding North Shore. Soft-spoken and serious, Ali is a college student majoring in political science back in his homeland.
