Welcome to North Shore Medical Center!
In this section you'll find a description of all the steps newly hired NSMC employees (including contractors and temporary staff) must complete before starting work.
1) Background Check
Human Resources uses the three forms below to complete a background check on a new employee. Please print out and return completed forms to Human Resources at NSMC Salem Hospital.
2) Pre-employment processing appointment
Once your background check is completed, you will have a pre-employment processing appointment with Human Resources. Our office is located on Axelrod 6 in the Axelrod Building of NSMC Salem Hospital, 81 Highland Ave, Salem, MA 01970.;
See Employee parking at NSMC Salem Hospital and Directions to HR office.
Forms to complete and bring to your appointment with Human Resources:
* In order for Human Resources to verfiy your employment eligibility, an I-9 form is completed. We list acceptable forms of identification needed for the I-9 form.
Health Screening
Following your appointment with Human Resources you will go to the Office of Occupational Health. You should bring with you your immunization history regarding measles, mumps, German measles and chicken pox, as well as any TB skin tests or Tb treatment information. Your Primary Care physician's office should be able to provide you with this information.
At the Occupational Health Office you will complete a medical history questionnaire, discuss your past medical history (as is relevant to your position), and possibly receive vaccinations, TB testing, and/or a TB symptom review. In addition, if your new position requires medical clearance, Occupational Health may schedule follow-up appointments to complete the requirements of your hire.
Contractors and Temporary Staff
Contractors and temporary staff are required to complete a Health Screening Form for Contractors and Temporary Staff and submit it to the Human Resources Office. Any necessary follow-up appointments to complete the requirements for medical clearance may also be requested.

3) Hospital Orientation
All new employees are required by The Joint Commission to complete an orientation, which assists new staff in learning about North Shore Medical Center.
Orientation Schedule
New Employee Orientation is held twice monthly, on Mondays.
Day One of orientation is held in room 102 of the Davenport Building on the NSMC Salem Hospital campus. See Employee parking at NSMC Salem Hospital It begins at 8:00am and ends at 4:00pm. A continental breakfast will be provided but lunch is NOT provided during orientation. However, there is a cafeteria close by where you can purchase lunch.
Day Two consists of customer service training and other applicable training. New employees may be asked to attend an orientation that lasts between 1 and 5 days. You will be given a specific orientation schedule by the recruiter when you are hired.
Parking
On the day(s) you attend orientation, you may park in the 108 Jefferson Ave Parking Lot or the parking lot marked "G". Parking is free for all employees. Employee parking at NSMC Salem Hospital
Business Casual Dress
Business casual dress is encouraged for all employees attending orientation. DO NOT attend wearing jeans, shorts, sweatpants, hats/bandanas, flip flops or tank tops. You may want to bring a light jacket or sweater because the temperature fluctuates in the room, even in summer.
Annual Mandatory Training
All newly hired employees (including contractors and temporary staff) are required to complete annual mandatory training. You will have a chance to review the material during Day One of orientation.
If you are not scheduled to attend orientation prior to starting work you will instead be asked to read and complete the annual education self-study and test (below). The completed test must be brought to your processing appointment; otherwise you will complete the annual education self-study and test at the time of your processing appointment.
If you have any problems or questions related to the process outlined above, please call Human Resources at 978.825.6294 or 781.477.3018.
