Salem, Mass. – Raymond Smith, M.D., was recently elected by his peers to serve as president of the medical staff at North Shore Medical Center (NSMC).

Dr. Smith, a member of the NSMC medical staff and an anesthesiologist with Anesthesia Associates of Massachusetts, will act as a liaison between the medical center’s 650 board-certified physicians as well as the NSMC Board of Trustees and administration. During his two-year term, Dr. Smith will be involved with many aspects of NSMC administration including mentoring and the integration of our new and recently trained physicians into the Medical Staff. He will also be an active member of the NSMC Board of Trustees.

Dr. Smith joined NSMC more than 20 years ago, and has held a range of leadership positions within the medical staff. He has served as chair of NSMC’s Institutional Review Board and received the NSMC Physician of Excellence Award in 2000.

“I’m excited to take on this new and challenging role. This position provides an opportunity to continue to provide North Shore patients with the best health care available as we adjust to rapidly changing paradigms of health care delivery,” said Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith is board certified in anesthesiology as well as pain management. A graduate of the University of Miami School of Medicine, Dr. Smith performed his residency in anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital and his internship in internal medicine at NSMC Salem Hospital. He also holds a B.A., M.A., and a Ph.D. in pharmacology from Oxford University in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Smith, a Marblehead resident, is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the British Pharmacological Society and the Royal Society of Medicine.
