NSMC ‘Healers’ Share Their Art
2/23/2009

Salem, Mass. – More than a dozen North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) doctors, nurses and other medical staff will show off their artistic abilities in “The Healers Art,” a new art exhibit put on by the Marblehead Arts Association (MAA).

The art show kicks off February 28 and runs through March 29 at the King Hooper Mansion in Marblehead. The exhibit is open to the public and will feature work from several different mediums including oil paintings, photography, glass, and sculpture. The event will be held in the Ballroom Gallery and there will be a free artists’ reception open to the public on March 1st from 2-4 p.m.

The idea for the exhibit was to show the power and connection between art and healing, and also a way to explore how medical professionals incorporate art into their lives.

One of the NSMC physicians deeply connected to the world of art is Richard Pohl, M.D., of Marblehead. He is a psychiatrist and art-committee member or the MAA. In “The Healers Art” he will be showcasing his oil paintings.

“Art taps into emotions directly, which makes it a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool, especially with children,” said Dr. Pohl. “Often the process of producing art is unconscious and unfettered by pretense, an expression of emotion itself.”

Many of the exhibits featured come from people with close backgrounds to their professions. A surgical technician plans to display his oil paintings which require immense patience and attention to detail, much like the demands of his daily duties.
