Peabody, Mass. – North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) has completed the installation of a new 3 Tesla (3T) MRI scanner, the most powerful magnetic imaging on the market today. This new technology delivers to NSMC the most advanced imaging services in a magnet that is designed for maximum patient comfort.

“We are very excited to add this new technology to our already outstanding lineup of MRI services. This system will provide our doctors with a wider range of imaging capabilities and will enable them to cater to patient preferences for effectively,” said Howard Lowy, M.D., director of NSMC Magnetic Imaging.

The 3T scanner gives NSMC physicians access to many applications, including neurology evaluations, orthopedic and cartilage assessment and vascular imaging. The coil technology in this MRI scanner also is faster and more accurate than older technology.

The magnet’s 70cm opening is wider than older machines and can accommodate a diverse array of patients including those who have traditionally been hard to image, like children, those who are obese (up to 550 lbs), the elderly, and those who are claustrophobic.

“The 3T MRI gives NSMC Magnetic Imaging one of the most advanced pieces of MRI equipment out there,” said Dr. Lowy. “With this system, we have not only the strongest magnet, but a system that enables us to deliver a more comfortable imaging experience to patients.”
