Salem, Mass. – North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) hosted the kick-off for it’s 18th annual Cancer WALK Wednesday at the Whole Foods Market in Swampscott. Already, more than 1,000 walkers have signed up to raise money, create awareness, and remember loved ones who have been affected by this disease.
Registered walkers picked up fundraising kits at the kick-off event and enjoyed complimentary food tasting provided by Whole Foods Market. In addition, the store donated five percent of its sales on Wednesday to the NSMC Cancer WALK, totaling $2,464.
“We are proud to support NSMC’s Cancer Walk by hosting this Five Percent Day”, said Heidi Briggs, Marketing Team Leader at Swampscott Whole Foods Market. “Hosting Five Percent Day is one of the meaningful ways we are able to give back to our community. We are always willing to support the incredible efforts of NSMC in the fight against cancer”.
In 18 years, the NSMC Cancer WALK has raised more than $13 million in the fight again cancer. Each walker typically raises $100 or more – money that will directly benefit the expansion and relocation of the NSMC Cancer Center to the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care, slated to open in Danvers in 2009. The state-of-the-art facility will ensure continued access to comprehensive and coordinated medical, surgical, and radiation oncology care in a compassionate, community-based environment.
