Advanced cardiac care

NSMC Salem Hospital is the only hospital on the North Shore licensed to perform emergency and elective angioplasty, percutaneous interventions (PCI’s) and cardiac surgery.  Specialized treatment begins the moment a patient enters the emergency department. Exceptional cardiac care is available to patients immediately, which can be an important advantage. Should someone you know display symptoms of acute heart trouble, call 911 and have them brought directly to the Emergency Room at 81 Highland Avenue. Learn more about the NSMC Heart Center.

Designated primary Stroke Service hospital

HealthGrades Stroke Care Excellence Award for 2007

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health designated NSMC Salem Hospital as a primary Stroke Service hospital. As a designated hospital, NSMC Salem Hospital provides emergency diagnostic and therapeutic services by a multidisciplinary team 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to patients with symptoms of acute stroke. When a patient has suffered a stroke it it critical that treatment start immediately, since time is of the essence.

Urgent Care

We use mobile equipment carts to bring emergency care to our most seriously injured patients who are unable to move. Each of our private patient care rooms is equipped with a telephone, television and private locker. We also have private suites for patients who are in need of psychiatric attention.

24 hour translation services

NSMC provides interpreter services at no cost to patients, family members or companions involved in patient care. Trained medical interpreters are available in French, Haitian Creole, Khmer (Cambodian), Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, as well as in American Sign Language. For additional languages, NSMC will try to provide in-person interpretation whenever possible. If an interpreter is not available, staff may use a telephone interpreter service that offers up to 140 languages to communicate with you.

Hearing impaired persons may elect to bring their own interpreters or NSMC will provide the services of interpreters who are registered with the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing when available.

If you require an interpreter, please call 781.477.3689.
