Patients who need medical oncology treatment or consulation are cared for through our medical oncology service. Under the leadership of Joel H. Schwartz, M.D., Director of Oncology Services and a medical oncologist on staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, our team coordinates patient care for a wide range of diagnoses. All medical oncologists at the NSMC Cancer Center are fellowship trained and board certified (or eligible for board certification) in hematology and/or oncology.

The medical oncology facility includes a newly renovated physician practice area and a family consultation area. The chemotherapy infusion area is equipped with personal televisions and telephones, helping to ensure that patients are comfortable and relaxed during their visits. Our team of oncology trained nurse clinicians assess and monitor patients throughout their treatment sessions and are always available to answer questions.

Our on-site pharmacy department works with all members of the patient care team to provide effective, efficient and safe delivery of cancer medications. Most of our pharmacists are board certified in oncology pharmacy and are intimately involved in all aspects of managing patient care, from assisting in the selection of chemotherapy treatments to recommending pain medication. NSMC Cancer Center understands patients’ need for privacy and comfort during treatment for cancer.
