Cardiac Rehabilitation complements the medical and/or surgical treatment plan outlined by your physician.
If you have recently had angina, angioplasty, heart attack, valve repair or replacement, heart or heart/lung transplant, stent placement or coronary artery bypass graft surgery, this program will help you reduce your cardiac risk factors, strengthen your heart and improve your fitness level. Our program consists of several components.

Most participants complete the program within 12 weeks, although the duration of the program varies according to a patient's recovery progress, fitness level and insurance coverage. Classes are available to accommodate most schedules.
Ongoing Cardiac Rehabilitation Support
After you have completed cardiac rehabilitation, we help you stay on track with our dynamic maintenance exercise program. We have a Maintenance Gym at NSMC Union Hospital, as well as a Maintenance Gym on Macomber 5 of NSMC Salem Hospital. Both operate on a drop-in, self-pay basis. Dr. Harvey Zarren runs a program called Healing Your Heart and our Heart Smart community lecture series is free and open to the public. NSMC's Wellness and Integrative Medicine offers additional therapeutic programs.

Our team has extensive expertise in cardiac rehabilitation and cardiac risk factor modification and includes cardiologists, cardiac nurses, exercise physiologists, clinical counselors and registered dietitians committed to your long-term cardiac health. For more than 20 years, we have successfully helped thousands of men and women adopt a “heart healthy” lifestyle. Your primary care physician or your cardiologist can refer you to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Most insurances cover a portion of this program.
