A child is at risk for developing hearing loss if he or she has a medical condition or genetic syndrome commonly associated with hearing loss, has a craniofacial abnormality (such as cleft palate, Down syndrome, or malformed ear), or if there is a family history of hearing loss,. Exposure to very loud noises and certain infections can lead to hearing loss, as can head injury or significant medical difficulties following birth.
MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center is one of the state's DPH Level 1 approved evaluation centers.
If your infant or school-aged child fails the school hearing test, or if a family member or caregiver has expressed concerns about your child’s hearing, we encourage you to schedule your child for an audiology exam. Speech, language or other delays, or learning problems in school, may all be traced to a hearing problem.
