The NSMC Diagnostic Radiology Department provides a wide variety of diagnostic studies and procedures on patients of all ages, including plain film radiography, fluoroscopy and X-rays. Advances in the field of diagnostic radiology have made it possible for physicians to view highly accurate images of a patient's bones and soft tissues, which results in more accurate diagnoses and treatments for a range of diseases.
Plain film radiography and fluoroscopy have been the mainstay of diagnostic radiology for many years. They are often the first radiological exams performed on a patient. X-ray (radiography) is commonly used to evaluate the chest, spine, extremities and abdomen. Sometimes a radiologist will insert an IV or catheter containing a harmless dye-like substance into a patient's arm prior to performing the X-ray. This is done to heighten the contrast on the resulting images (of the urinary system, bowel or other internal organs being X-rayed.) The contrast enables the physician to gain a better idea of the internal situation. X-rays are also sometimes used in conjunction with other imaging procedures, such as an MRI, so that the physician can make a comparison.
All of our procedures are performed with state-of-the-art equipment in an all-digital all PACS environment and meet the standards of the American College of Radiology.
