Surgery

NSMC's Thoracic Surgery service provides an unparalleled level of care in the North Shore community.

We diagnose and treat cancerous and benign disorders of lungs, trachea, esophagus, chest wall, diaphragm and mediastinum, and offer both minimally invasive and traditional approaches.

Our Thoracic Surgery service includes a North Shore practice of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Division of Thoracic Surgery. All three surgeons in the practice hold joint appointments at MGH and NSMC, and one also serves as the chief of NSMC's division of thoracic surgery. Through this unique partnership with MGH we are able to offer patients on the North Shore access to some of the nation's foremost experts in treating complex thoracic disease.

Surgical Specialties

Using the latest surgical techniques, our surgeons perform a wide variety of procedures including bronchoscopy, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, mediastinascopy, minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) surgery, and major therapeutic and reconstructive operations. Our minimally invasive techniques require smaller incisions, leading to less postoperative pain and a quicker recovery.

Many of our patients are referred by other physicians for the treatment of complex lesions of the tracheobroncial tree requiring reconstructive airway surgery, including “sleeve resection” and other bronchoplastic techniques. Our surgeons also offer the full repertoire of surgical and reconstructive procedures for benign and malignant esophageal diseases. For patients with end-stage lung disease, we also offer lung transplantation in coordination with MGH.

Coordinated Cancer Care

We work side-by-side with medical and radiation oncology specialists at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with chest malignancies. This coordinated approach gives each patient an individualized care plan tailored to his or her particular needs.
