The NSMC Sperm Bank is located at the Women's Center in Danvers (where the service is an integral part of our Reproductive Medicine program). We are the only program on the North Shore to offer non-donor sperm banking to assist with fertility treatments for male patients addressing infertility due to sperm quality issues or who have planned chemotherapy threatments.

What to ExpectHow many appointments? There are several factors that will determine how many appointments you'll need for making sperm deposits. These include the quality and volume of the sperm deposit, how well your sperm freezes and the nature of the treatments that are planned for the future. We recommend you bank enough specimens for at least six months of insemination. This typically means that four to five donations are needed, but in some cases, as many as 10-12 have been necessary. We recommend that patients schedule appointments for every 48 hours until the minimum number of deposits is collected. You should abstain from sex in between appointments.
Length of storageWe offer up to 10 years of storage, but will extend the storage beyond that at your request. Pregnancies have been reported after as much as 16 years of storage.
MedicationsIf you are using prescribed medications, please indicate which medications you are taking; most medications will not pose a problem but some may affect the quality of your sperm specimen.
Insurance Insurance will usually cover this process if the procedure is being done for a medically-indicated reason (pre-chemotherapy, pre-lymph node dissection). Cryobanking for the sake of convenience or for pre-vasectomy is typically not covered. Check with your insurance company.
Referral?A doctor's order is needed for this procedure.
