STEVE ANTONAKES

Steven L. Antonakes is the Executive Vice President for Enterprise Risk Management at Eastern Bank. In this capacity, he oversees Eastern Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management function and manages a range of responsibilities including compliance, risk review and management and information and corporate security.

Mr. Antonakes previously served as the Deputy Director and the Associate Director for Supervision, Enforcement, and Fair Lending at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He was the Bureau’s second highest ranking official, oversaw the supervision of all banks and non-banks under the Bureau’s jurisdiction, and established the Bureau’s consumer protection supervision program for the largest financial institutions in the country which collectively account for more than 80 percent of the nation’s banking assets. He supervised a staff of nearly 800 and administered a budget of over $145 million.

Prior to joining the Bureau, Mr. Antonakes was appointed by successive governors to serve as the Massachusetts Commissioner of Banks from 2003 to 2010. Preceding his appointment as Commissioner, Mr. Antonakes served in a variety of managerial positions at the Division of Banks having joined the agency as an entry-level bank examiner in 1990.

During his 25-year regulatory career, Mr. Antonakes staffed the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), served as the first state-voting member of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), Vice Chairman of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), and as a founding member of the governing board of the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS). In March 2007, Mr. Antonakes received NeighborWorks America’s Government Service Award for his work in combatting foreclosures.

Mr. Antonakes is a proud graduate of the Lynn Public Schools and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Penn State University, a Master of Business Administration from Salem State University, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Law and Public Policy from Northeastern University.


NATE BRYANT, Ed.D.

Dr. Nate Bryant was appointed as the interim president of North Shore Community College in 2020. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Bryant served as the Vice President and Chief of Staff to the President at Salem State University. He has more than 30 years of experience in higher education and during that time, has overseen admissions, financial aid, academic advising, athletics, marketing and communications, external affairs, grants, and public relations. He also has considerable experience in the areas of crisis management, fundraising, and strategic planning.

In addition to his work in higher education, Dr. Bryant has worked with many non-profit organizations on the North Shore. In addition to the NSMC Board of Trustees, he is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Salem Boys and Girls Club, Board of Directors for the Salem Chamber of Commerce, Executive Committee for the Salem Partnership, Corporator for Marblehead Bank, and volunteer for Haven from Hunger Food Pantry.

Dr. Bryant received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Master of Education from Salem State University, and his Doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts Boston. He and his family reside in Salem.


LISA CARBONE

Lisa Carbone is a long-time resident of the North Shore, whose involvement with Salem Hospital goes back to the first Cancer Walk in 1990. Lisa has served as past Chairperson of the Cancer Walk, on the Cancer Walk/Gourmet Gala Advisory Committee, and as a member of the North Shore Medical Center’s Board of Overseers. She is currently a member of the Development Committee and serves as a Corporator of Massachusetts General Brigham.

In addition to her work with the hospital, she is a Director at the Lynn Community Health Center where she serves on the Finance Committee and chairs the Audit Committee. She previously served as Chairperson and Trustee of Marian Court College, Vice President and Director of North Shore Elder Services, President and Director of the Swampscott Rotary Club and Director of the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Carbone is a Paul Harris Fellow.

Ms. Carbone has spent her career in banking with more than 30 years in various leadership roles at Eastern Bank, and most recently at Salem Five as Senior Vice President, Director of Cash Management & Commercial Services. She has been acknowledged with a variety of sales and service awards and is a past recipient of the Boston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award.

Ms. Carbone holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Babson College and is a graduate of the Retail Banking School at the University of Virginia.

Although originally from Rhode Island, Ms. Carbone has made the North Shore home since graduating from college. She and her family live in Swampscott.


DAVID CLANCEY

David Clancey is a seasoned information technology executive and serial entrepreneur with more than 40 years of experience in companies from startups and consultancies to established public companies. He has an impressive track record of identifying key technology and business trends and translating this research into meaningful strategic concepts, solutions and tactical rollout plans.

With NSMC Board of Trustees member, Shirley Singleton, Mr. Clancey co-founded Edgewater Technologies in 1992 and served as its chief strategy officer and chief technology officer, growing the company to more than 500 employees and 135M+ in annualized revenue during his 25-year tenure. He currently serves as a principle in Bluefinbay Advisors, a provider of specialty business and technology services.

Mr. Clancey has maintained a lifelong interest in healthcare and improving healthcare delivery, and early in his career worked as a respiratory therapist at Beverly Hospital. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Bentley College and is a resident of West Newbury, Mass.


GARGI COOPER, APRN-BC

Gargi Cooper, APRN-BC, is nurse practitioner at the Lynn Community Health Center and a leader in developing programs to provide comprehensive care services to homeless populations.

She currently leads a novel program to provide primary and urgent care services to the homeless and underserved population in the city of Lynn, serving as medical director of the Recuperative Care Center/ Medical Outreach Program. This program was established in 2018 with funding from North Shore Medical Center and Mass General Brigham and operates in collaboration with Bridgewell, a local social services agency. Through this program, clients receive internal medicine care, health promotion, care management and counseling for acute and chronic illness, in settings that include local shelters, the street, the Lynn Community Health Center and single occupancy residences.

Prior to joining LCHC, Ms. Cooper spent 10 years as a nurse practitioner for Boston Healthcare for the Homeless. She is a member of the Adjunct Faculty of Simmons College of Nursing and Health Sciences and holds a Master’s Degree in nursing from the MGH Institute of Health Professions and a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston University. She is a resident of Swampscott and recently served as the Chair of the Swampscott School Committee.


DHARMA CORTÉS, Ph.D.

Dharma Cortes, Ph.D., is a social scientist for the Health Equity Research Laboratory at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Middle School, who has devoted much of her career to finding ways to close the gaps in health disparities among under-served populations.

For more than 20 years Dr. Cortés has been conducting community-based research with Latinos in the U.S., focusing on acculturation, health, mental health, and access to healthcare. She has made major contributions to the understanding of the process of acculturation, cultural, language, and literacy issues among Latinos in the United States through several of her publications and research activities.

She has been principal investigator, co-investigator and consultant to numerous studies on the delivery of health care services funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Robert Wood-Johnson Foundation, among others. They have included projects designed to uncover barriers to care, cultural issues affecting delivery of health care services and obesity prevention as well as organizational aspects affecting the delivery of services to culturally diverse populations.

A native of Puerto Rico, Dr. Cortés received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and Master of Arts degree in clinical psychology from the University of Puerto Rico. She received her Doctorate degree in sociology from Fordham University. She also completed post-doctoral training in medical anthropology at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Social Medicine. Dr. Cortes is a resident of Lynn.


CHARLES F. DESMOND, Ed.D.

Charles Desmond, Ed.D., is a senior fellow at the New England Board of Higher Education where he advises on strategic efforts to advance and enhance education issues related to New England’s human capital and economic competitiveness. He formerly served as a higher education policy advisor to former Governor Deval Patrick. In 2016, he was appointed chief executive officer of Inversant, a Boston-based nonprofit that helps families learn about and save for college.

A Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Desmond served from 2002 to 2009 as Executive Vice President of the Trefler Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving educational opportunities and success for Boston's urban youth. At Trefler, he provided managerial oversight, advocacy and leadership on behalf of the Foundation to strengthen partnerships with Boston Public Schools, and nourished collaborative initiatives between and among philanthropic institutions to enhance their impact on urban educational reform.

Prior to Trefler, Dr. Desmond worked for 30 years at the University of Massachusetts Boston, with a focus on student affairs and community collaboration. He was Associate Chancellor for School/Community Collaboration, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dean of the College of Public and Community Services, and has also served as a guidance counselor at Northeastern University’s African/American Institute, and in the Boston Public Schools.

Dr. Desmond is active in civic and community organizations, including serving as president of AARP Massachusetts and as a member of the Review Committee for the Broad Prize in Urban Education, Board of Governors for the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University, Brown University Design Group/Annenberg Institute for School Reform, and Cambridge College Board of Trustees. He was the co-chair of the Urban Educators Corps and is a past president of the Massachusetts Educational Opportunity Association, and he has been active with the American Council on Education, and the Council for Opportunity in Education, among other organizations.

He has received numerous honors and awards including honorary doctorates by Framingham State University, Westfield State University and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Desmond earned his Ed.D. in instructional leadership from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a B.S. in sociology from Northeastern University. He is a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army, receiving both Silver and Bronze stars.


NANCY HAWTHORNE

Nancy Hawthorne is a co-founder and Partner of Hawthorne Financial Advisors, LLC (HFA), an independent registered investment advisor based in Marblehead, Mass. In addition to her role at HFA, Ms. Hawthorne serves on the corporate boards of The MetLife funds, Avid Technology, Inc., (where she also served as Chairman from 2004 to 2015), THL Credit and Charles River Associates, a leading global consulting firm.

Prior to forming HFA, she was the Chief Executive Officer of Clerestory LLC, a firm providing counsel in corporate and organizational matters to organizations including NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration), DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense), numerous privately-held businesses, and several major telecommunications companies in Europe, Latin America and the United States.

Ms. Hawthorne was Chief Financial Officer of Continental Cablevision, Inc. until 1996, when the company was sold to US West for $12 billion. As CFO, she was responsible for treasury, merger and acquisition, investor relations and accounting functions, as well as the company’s financial strategy and capital-markets activities.

Ms. Hawthorne received a B.A. from Wellesley College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Her not-for-profit service includes the Wellesley College Investment Committee Board of Trustees, 11 years on the board of New England Medical Center, 6 years on the board at the Wellesley Centers for Women, and 10 years on the board of the Brookline Community Mental Health Center.

Her professional affiliations include membership in the Wellesley College Business Leadership Council, of which she is a past Chair, the Financial Executives Institute, of which she is past president of the Boston Chapter, and the CEO Advisory Board of the Harvard Business School Association.

Ms. Hawthorne’s honors include a Public Service Medal awarded by NASA in 2001, selection by the Defense Department to participate in its September 2008 Joint Commission Orientation Conference, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Boston Business Journal in 2011.


DAVID IVES, CHAIRMAN

David. Ives is the Chairman of Northshore International Insurance Services, Inc., (NiiS) which provides claims management services, audit services, and consulting services to more than 360 clients throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

In addition to executive management responsibilities, Mr. Ives is involved in providing strategic consulting and advice to many NiiS clients. He is also active in technically challenging client matters including reinsurance, arbitration and litigation. A frequent speaker at industry seminars, Mr. Ives has published articles on insurance and claims topics in The Self-Insurer and The John Liner Review.

Mr. Ives received his CPCU designation in 1985 and is a former director of the Boston Chapter. He is also a member of the Society’s Claims, Reinsurance, International Insurance and Risk Management special interest sections.

Mr. Ives is a past President and Trustee of the Insurance Library Association of Boston and formerly Chairman of its Education Committee and a member of its faculty. He is also a Corporator of Eastern Bank and Partners Healthcare Systems.

Since 2004, Mr. Ives has served as a Trustee of the North Shore Medical Center and in 2010, was appointed to the Massachusetts Healthcare Quality and Cost Council’s Expert Performance Measurement Panel by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Mr. Ives is active in many community organizations, including The Salem Partnership, where he served a three-year term as its President. In April, 1996, Mr. Ives received a three-year appointment from Governor William Weld to the Board of the Salem State College Assistance Corporation, an educational and economic development agency. Mr. Ives was reappointed in 1999 for a second term and was appointed Board Chairman in February 2001.

A graduate of St. John’s Prep in Danvers and the University of Maine in Orono, Maine, he has been an active alumnus at both institutions. He was appointed an Honorary Lifetime Director of the University of Maine General Alumni Association Board of Directors in recognition of his involvement with the Association and contributions to the University. At its 2003 Commencement, Mr. Ives was honored to receive St. John’s Prep’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Mr. Ives resides in West Newbury.


KIAME MAHANIAH, M.D.

Kiame Mahaniah, M.D., is the CEO of Lynn Community Health Center in Lynn, MA. He sees his interest in medicine as key to his pursuit of social justice and believes that interaction, communication, and depth of doctor/patient relationships can have significant implications for individuals and communities.

In his clinical work, Dr. Mahaniah has been a leader in integrating substance use disorder treatment into primary care and teaching. Prior to joining the Lynn Community Health Center, Dr. Mahaniah served as a staff physician and residency faculty member at Greater Lawrence Family Health Center from 2003-2012. He also has served as the Chief Medical Officer of the North Shore Community Health, Inc. in Salem, MA. He teaches in the family medicine department at Tufts University School of Medicine as well in the Tufts Student Service Scholar Program.

Dr. Mahania was born in Philadelphia but grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Geneva, Switzerland, before returning to the United States at age 19. He attended Haverford College and received his degree in Political Economy of the Third World, taking a special interest in the transformation of agrarian/traditional society into modern economies. He attended Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and completed his residency at St. Margaret Memorial Hospital.


TERENCE A. McGINNIS

Terence A. McGinnis is senior “of counsel” in the Corporate and Transactions Department of Nutter, McClennen, & Fish LLP, and a member of the firm’s Banking and Financial Services group. His practice focuses on corporate governance, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance for financial institutions.

From 2016 to 2018, Mr. McGinnis served as the Commissioner of the Division of Banks in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, overseeing 200 state-chartered banks and credit unions with assets totaling more than $400 billion. He also oversaw the licensing and supervision of more than 9,000 non-depository licensees including mortgage lenders, mortgage brokers, mortgage loan originators, consumer finance companies, money service businesses, debt collectors, and loan servicers.

Prior to his state appointment, Mr. McGinnis served as executive vice president and general counsel at Eastern Bank and a member of its management committee. He has also held a variety of senior legal positions with both the Bank of Boston and Fleet Bank including leading the International Law Practice Group at FleetBoston Financial Corporation. During his government service, Mr. McGinnis served as associate counsel to the Committee on Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives under the late Congressman John Joseph Moakley.

Mr. McGinnis is a retired Navy Captain, having served both on active duty and in the Reserves with the US Navy. He held several command positions with the Naval Reserve and served in a number of senior military roles while activated for various US, international, and NATO exercises in Europe, Latin America, and the Far East. He was twice awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal, among other military citations.

Mr. McGinnis is an honor graduate of Merrimack College where was an alternate Woodrow Wilson National Scholar and class valedictorian. He earned his master’s degree from Boston College Graduate School and received his law degree from Boston College Law School. Salem State University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for his community service on the North Shore, which included participation on the boards of non-profits in the healthcare industry, legal services programs, and education support initiatives for inner-city children. Mr. McGinnis is a resident of Lynn.


JEROME T. McMANUS

Jay McManus has served as Director of the Children's Law Center of Massachusetts, a legal aid program for indigent children and youth, since 1999. He formerly worked as staff counsel to the state's Department of Children & Families and as Assistant General Counsel to AFSCME, Council 93, a public employee labor union.

In addition to his role as a community representative on NSMC’s board, Mr. McManus has served in other volunteer capacities through the years, including with VISTA-UYA, the Christian Appalachian Project, as a Department of Children & Families foster parent, and as a board member to community and state advocacy organizations. He also was state coordinator, between 1991 and 2007, for a Belfast-based project that provided relief to children affected by the conflict in Ireland.

Mr. McManus is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and earned his law degree from New England Law, Boston. McManus lives in Arlington.


MARY G. PUMA

Since 2002, Mary Puma has served as Chief Executive Officer of Axcelis Technologies, a leading supplier of enabling ion implantation solutions for the semiconductor industry. She played an instrumental role in the company’s spin off from Eaton Corporation in 2000, when she was named President and Chief Operating Officer. Ms. Puma joined the semiconductor business in 1998, which was then known as Eaton’s Semiconductor Operation, first serving as the Vice President of its implant business and then as the Vice President for the total operation.

Prior to joining Eaton, she spent 15 years in various marketing and general management positions at five different General Electric business units.

Ms. Puma is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Tufts University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. She earned her Master of Science degree in management from the MIT Sloan School of Management. She is a member of the boards at Nordson Corporation, North Shore Medical Center and Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). Ms. Puma is a resident of Newburyport.


PHILLIP L. RICE, Jr., M.D.


MARK A. SCHECHTER, M.D.

Mark Schechter, M.D., is Chair of Psychiatry at North Shore Medical Center, overseeing NSMC’s 120-bed Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, the largest inpatient psychiatry service embedded in a general hospital in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Epstein Center is a collaborative service with Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry and offers expert treatment for adults, seniors, children and adolescents. In addition to leading the Epstein Center, Dr. Schechter also oversees NSMC’s extensive emergency, inpatient and outpatient psychiatry services.

Dr. Schechter combines his interest in leadership with scholarship and clinical expertise in psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, and the assessment and treatment of suicidal patients. Understanding suicidality and developing an integrative psychotherapeutic approach to suicidal patients has been central to his clinical work, academic work and publications. He is a member of the Boston Suicide Study Group, has published extensively and provides frequent consultation to colleagues regarding risk assessment, psychotherapy, and treatment planning for high risk patients.

Dr. Schechter is also dedicated to advancing the clinical skills of the Psychiatry staff at NSMC. He has initiated and encouraged educational conference opportunities, introduced a training program for medical and PA students and has taught post-graduate residents at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital for more than a decade. He has lectured locally, nationally and internationally about psychotherapeutic approaches to suicidal patients and other aspects of treatment.

Dr. Schechter received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Haverford College and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency at McLean Hospital. He maintains academic appointments at Harvard Medical School, Tufts University School of Medicine and the Mass General Institute of Health Professionals and clinical appointments at NSMC, McLean Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.


SHIRLEY SINGLETON

Shirley Singleton serves as Managing Director of Bluefinbay Advisors, launched in 2017, to provide boutique business and technology specialty services. Typical areas of engagement span specialized business strategies, such as expediting digital transformation, real-time risk management and crisis management. Ms. Singleton has more than 25 years of experience managing a consulting services company through several iterative business cycles of growth, retraction, and critical transformations.

Prior to starting Bluefinbay Advisors, Ms. Singleton was Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Edgewater Technology. She co-founded the company in 1992 with her partner, David Clancey, also an NSMC trustee. Edgewater grew from a five-person consulting company into a public company with more than 500 employees with several offices located throughout North America and the United Kingdom.

Ms. Singleton has been presented with numerous awards and recognitions. For 12 consecutive years, The Commonwealth Institute recognized Edgewater as one of the Top 100 Woman-Led Businesses in Massachusetts. Edgewater was recognized as one of the Top Performing Public Companies in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe’s Annual Globe 100.

Prior to consulting, Ms. Singleton focused her career on teaching and coaching. She coached the New England Junior Olympic team in track and field and was named by The Boston Globe as Coach of the Year for track and field in 1980.

Ms. Singleton was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Endicott College in Beverly, MA and is a graduate of Northeastern University.


MARION WINFREY, Ed.D.

Dr. Marion Winfrey has had a long and distinguished career as a nurse, educator and administrator, having served as Associate Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, from 2002 until her retirement last year. Previously, she served as an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Salem State College.

Dr. Winfrey also has extensive clinical experience as a staff nurse at Tufts-New England Medical Center followed by 23 years as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital on both the neurosurgical unit and in the burn/trauma center.

While at UMass, Dr. Winfrey’s maintained a keen focus on the advancement of diverse colleagues in nursing to positions of increased responsibility. Throughout her career, she has also committed her time to community initiatives. She has volunteers for the Visiting Nurses Association of Greater Salem, and as a Corporator of Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital and a community liaison focused on advancing NSMC’s mission in the community. Her recent appointment to the NSMC Board of Trustees brings her interests in healthcare and community into alignment. Dr. Winfrey is a resident of Salem.
