FAQs

Is the drug hydroxychloroquine a potential treatment for COVID-19?

  • Hydroxychloroquine is not FDA approved to treat or prevent COVID-19, although it is being explored among a wide range of potential treatments and approaches.
  • The recently issued emergency authorization of the drug only applies to hospitalized patients. This authorization is not the same as FDA approval.
  • There is very little evidence that hydroxychloroquine works to treat COVID-19, and no evidence to show it can prevent the disease.

Studies done so far in COVID-19 patients were in hospitalized patients and were very small, and results cannot be used to make assumptions about how the medication would work in the general population.Researchers and clinicians are working diligently on a wide range of studies and trials to develop safe treatments for COVID-19 as quickly as possible.
