“Exercise has always been an important part of my life,” says Korumpas, a lifelong Salem resident and retired schoolteacher and guidance counselor. ” But in the spring of 2013 Korumpas began to experience pain, numbness and occasional weakness in his right leg.  After he participated in a spin-a-thon at his gym and experienced severe pain shooting down his right leg and numbness in his foot and toes. Korumpas immediately booked an appointment with Michael Medlock, M.D., a neurosurgeon and spine specialist in the NSPG Spine Care practice.

The diagnosis, he learned, was spinal stenosis. He initially worked with NSPG physical medicine and rehabilitation physician Kelly Pajelas, M.D., in the same NSPG practice. She provided nonsurgical treatment options such as medication, physical therapy and taught him how to modify his physical activities. While this helped to some extent, in time surgery was recommended to treat the underlying condition. Read more
