Continuous Improvement Work a Priority at North Shore Medical Center

North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) hosted its 4th Annual Improvement Fair Wednesday at its Salem Hospital campus. More than 600 physicians, employees and volunteers attended this year’s event, which showcases the work of teams from across the organization focused on redesigning how care is delivered, enhancing the patient experience and improving affordability.

 

More than 35 projects were on display at the event, hosted by doctors, nurses and other staff.

“This important annual event provides a great opportunity for our staff to celebrate all of the improvement work taking place and share it with their colleagues,” said Robert G. Norton, President of North Shore Medical Center. “The rigor and pace of this work, coupled with the energy and enthusiasm of the teams involved, is transforming how we deliver care at NSMC.”

Teams from NSMC Salem Hospital, NSMC Union Hospital and North Shore Physicians Group (NSPG) participated in the Improvement Fair. Projects included:

  • Reducing the waiting time it takes to get a patient from the Emergency Department into an inpatient room.
  • Improving communications between nurses about a patient’s plan of care, ensuring a smooth transition during shift changes.
  • The new techniques that NSMC Housekeepers are using to keep patient rooms germ free and comfortable.
  • The development of new tools that enable clinicians to have difficult, but important, discussions about end of life care.

The Improvement Fair offers a great opportunity for staff to learn more about improvement work taking place across NSMC and NSPG in an informal and collegial setting and for staff to support their colleagues who are actively involved.

Funding for the annual fair is provided through a philanthropic gift from the Albright Read Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Science and Medical Research (ARI). The ARI funds research, education, and implementation initiatives to improve healthcare services at North Shore Medical Center. A 2013 initial gift of $1.5 million from the Norman H. Read Charitable Trust established the Institute and will provide funding for the first three years.
