NSMC News Releases

Dr. Phillip Rice, Jr., M.D., Named Chair of Emergency Department
12/28/2017

Phillip Rice, Jr., M.D., has been named Chair of Emergency Medicine at North Shore Medical Center. He has been serving in this role in an interim capacity since last July.
Dr. Rice will be leading Emergency Medicine across NSMC, and collaborating with our clinical and operational teams in the care of our emergent and urgent patients. He joined NSMC as a full-time emergency attending physician in October 2009, and was appointed Vice Chair of the department in March 2012. We are fortunate that our search led us to Dr. Rice, who has an extensive background in emergency medicine and a deep knowledge of NSMC and the patients we serve.

Over his more than 30-year career, Dr. Rice has distinguished himself as a highly skilled clinician with a special focus on scholarship, performance improvement and administrative leadership. Prior to joining NSMC, he served for 10 years as an attending physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he was Vice Chair of Performance Improvement for the Emergency Department and Associate Director of Trauma. He spent the early years of his career in New York City, developing residency programs in emergency medicine at The Brooklyn Hospital Center and Kings County Hospital Center. Dr. Rice also taught extensively and established emergency medical standards for the New York City region as chair of the New York City Fire Department pre-hospital ambulance destination committee.

At NSMC, Dr. Rice has led efforts to train new attending physicians, managed the department’s peer review program and coordinated with the trauma team to develop a hands-on trauma training program. He recently collaborated with colleagues from across the organization to reduce the number of borders in our ED, and is making important contributions to the work of our Patient Flow Committee. As Chair, he will lead an Emergency Department that handles nearly 90,000 visits a year and also play a critical role in planning and opening NSMC’s new ED facility in 2019.

A native of Cleveland, Dr. Rice received bachelors of science and arts degrees from Stanford University and his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine. Among his academic appointments, he has been an instructor (1999) and senior lecturer (2016) in emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School.
