NSMC News Releases

North Shore Medical Center changing name and aligning with Mass General Brigham
3/15/2021

North Shore Medical Center (NSMC), a member of Mass General Brigham, is changing its name and brand to better align with the integrated healthcare system. In the upcoming weeks, NSMC will begin transitioning the North Shore Medical Center name to Salem Hospital and adopting a new brand identity.

Working as one

The NSMC change is part of a systemwide Mass General Brigham brand realignment that better communicates a common purpose – to build an integrated healthcare system with patients at its center. With the full range of capabilities of world-class clinicians and staff at academic medical centers, renowned specialty hospitals, community hospitals and community sites, patients and communities can benefit from exceptional care and innovation across the full spectrum of health care.

NSMC has already applied the new branding in Lynn, where the Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center opened last August on the campus of the former Union Hospital. Over the next few months, NSMC will apply the Salem Hospital and Mass General Brigham branding to websites, signs, ID badges, stationery, shuttle buses and more.

North Shore Physicians Group, which is affiliated with Salem Hospital and Mass General Brigham, will retain its name and modify its graphic identity to align more closely with new brand.

Joining NSMC in this phase of the new brand rollout are Mass General Brigham member hospitals including Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Mass Eye & Ear. Other member hospitals and organizations will follow in the months ahead.

The Origins of NSMC

The North Shore Medical Center name was adopted in 1993, when the organization included multiple hospitals and facilities across the North Shore including Salem and Union hospitals, North Shore Children’s Hospital, Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital and the North Shore Cancer Center.

Today, many of these facilities have been consolidated or closed, and NSMC has evolved to include a single, state-of-the-art acute care facility at Salem Hospital, an outpatient network anchored by North Shore Physicians Group and affiliated physicians and vital collaborations with Mass General Brigham experts who continue to bring the exceptional medical and surgical care to this community.

According to Laura Fleming, NSMC Executive Director of Marketing & Communications, “The partnership we have forged—and continue to forge—with Mass General Brigham has been critically important to our success and to ensuring that our patients receive the very best care. The updated brand identity communicates more clearly than ever that Salem Hospital, North Shore Physicians Group and Mass General Brigham are working together as one to improve the lives of patients across the North Shore.”

Salem Hospital is a member of Mass General Brigham, an academic healthcare system founded by Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital that is uniting great minds to make life-changing impact for patients in local communities and around the world. Serving the North Shore community for more than 100 years, Salem Hospital provides expert medical, surgical and psychiatric care and includes Salem Hospital, the Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, North Shore Physicians Group and a medical staff of nearly 700 physicians practicing in a wide range of specialties. @salemhospitalMA
