North Shore Medical Center Physicians Earn Top Honors
12/12/2017

North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) honored prominent physicians Albert Namias, M.D., with the Physician of Excellence Award; Allyson L. Preston, M.D., and Marc S. Rubin, M.D., with the Dr. E. Augustus Holyoke Memorial Award; and Melanie Nathan, M.D., with the Outstanding New Physician Award, during a ceremony held at the Salem Country Club in Peabody.

NSMC Physician of Excellence Award

The Physician of Excellence Award is considered the highest honor among NSMC’s medical staff and recognizes physicians who have made outstanding contributions to NSMC, the medical profession and the community.

Dr. Namias was honored with the Physician of Excellence Award in recognition of the profound and lasting impact he has made on the North Shore community through his perseverance, professionalism and commitment to his patients and colleagues.

“I am humbled to be included among the recipients of this distinguished honor,” said Dr. Namias. “Over the past 38 years, I have strived to build a community gastroenterology practice that is highly regarded by my patients and colleagues, and am deeply honored with this recognition.”

Prior to his current role as Medical Director of the North Shore Physicians Group gastroenterology practice, he served as Chief of Gastroenterology at NSMC from 1990 to 2016. He also played a lead role in developing the Mass General/North Shore Gastroenterology practice at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers and the Endoscopy Center at NSMC Salem Hospital.

Dr. E. Augustus Holyoke Memorial Award

Dr. Holyoke, for whom the Holyoke Award is named, was an eminent 18th-century Salem physician whose professional life spanned generations, having a tremendous positive impact on the health and well-being of his community. The physicians honored with the Dr. E. Augustus Holyoke Memorial Award this year are recognized for their leadership, expertise and commitment to bringing a higher level of care, safety and quality to North Shore patients.

Dr. Preston has served as Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NSMC since 2006, leading the development of women’s health care services at NSMC while maintaining a successful patient practice. Under her guidance, NSMC has developed a world-class, minimally invasive gynecology program, expanded the NSMC Birthplace and Special Care Nursery, and advanced a state-of-the-art Breast Health Service and several specialty programs in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital.

In addition, she has been a committed advocate for the underserved communities of the North Shore, developing exceptional women’s health programs in partnership with the Lynn Community Health Center and North Shore Community Health, Inc.

“I have been part of the NSMC family for 30 years and am honored and touched to be recognized by my colleagues all of whom do such great work,” said Dr. Preston.

Dr. Rubin serves as Chair of Surgery at NSMC where he has been a champion of clinical excellence for more than 25 years. Since joining NSMC, he has worked to enhance the culture of quality and safety in surgical services through increased collaboration with nursing, better data, stronger peer review and teamwork training. Throughout his career, Dr. Rubin has maintained an active practice in colorectal surgery and was the first on the North Shore to perform now-common procedures.

“Throughout my career, exceptional patient care has been my top priority,” said Dr. Rubin. “Having my peers recognize me with an award which is synonymous with quality and safety is such an honor.”

Outstanding New Physician Award

The NSMC Outstanding New Physician Award is presented for the first time this year to a physician early in his or her medical career who exemplifies a commitment to clinical excellence and collegiality and has made a significant impact in the clinical setting.

Dr. Nathan joined NSMC in 2012 and has distinguished herself for her clinical judgment, attention to detail and sheer enthusiasm for her patients and colleagues. She is a key provider in the North Shore Physicians Group OB/GYN practice, caring for women of all ages and specializing in preventive care, pregnancy care, labor and delivery services and gynecologic surgery.

“I am extremely honored to be the first recipient of this distinguished award,” said Dr. Nathan. “Caring for women in my community and connecting with them is work that is so important to me, so to be recognized for work I’m so passionate about is extremely gratifying.”
