North Shore Medical Center Physicians Honored For Excellence

North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) honored exceptional physicians Mark R. Anderson, M.D., and Wilfred R. Lewis, M.D., with the Physician of Excellence Award; Suzanne Nevins, R.N., with the Dr. E. Augustus Holyoke Memorial Award; and Mona Hinrichsen, M.D., and Adolfo M. Pena Salazar, M.D., with the Outstanding New Physician Award, during a ceremony held at Salem Country Club last month.

NSMC Physician of Excellence Award

The Physician of Excellence Award is the highest honor presented by the NSMC medical staff and recognizes physicians who have made outstanding contributions to NSMC, the medical profession and the community.

 

Mark Anderson, M.D.

Dr. Mark Anderson, of Marblehead, received the Physician of Excellence Award in recognition of his expert cardiology care and for his contributions to advancing clinical outcomes.

Dr. Anderson joined North Shore Cardiovascular Associates (now NSPG Cardiovascular Medicine) in 1990 and has earned the gratitude and admiration of thousands of patients and families for his expertise, warmth and skill. He is revered by his colleagues for his worth ethic, humility and meticulousness and is frequently sought out for advice on thoughtful patient care.

Wilfred Lewis, M.D.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Wilfred Lewis, of Middleton, was awarded the Physician of Excellence Award in recognition of his expert clinical judgment, deep knowledge.

As the Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesia and former Director of Cardiac Anesthesia at NSMC, he led the development of anesthesia services at NSMC and was instrumental in building a world class cardiology program at NSMC. He has also received awards for Clinical Excellence and Professionalism from the Department of Surgery in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He has served as an instructor in Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical school since 2013. 

Dr. E. Augustus Holyoke Memorial Award

Dr. Holyoke, for whom the Holyoke Award is named, was an eminent 18th-century Salem physician who cared for generations of patients and had a tremendously positive impact on the health and well-being of his community. The nurse honored with the Dr. E. Augustus Holyoke Memorial Award this year is recognized for her compassion and commitment to patients and their families.

Suzanne Nevins, R.N.

Suzanne Nevins, R.N., of Peabody, has been a nurse in the NSMC Special Care Nursery for more than 40 years. A true professional, Nevins honors both the great joys and sorrows inherent in neonatal medicine. She organizes the Special Care Nursery Reunion and also leads NSMC’s Infant Loss Support Group to enable families who have lost a child to grieve with others who understand their pain. She takes special care to honor every child in her care, no matter how small of healthy.

Nevins is a champion for compassion, communication and humanity in medicine. After her own medical crisis, she became an advocate for MITSS (Medically Induced Trauma Support Services), where as a peer supporter she comforts both patients and clinicians. She has been instrumental in organizing a Facial Palsy Support Group on Facebook that began with three members and now has a national and international reach.

Outstanding New Physician Award

The NSMC Outstanding New Physician Award is presented to a physician or physicians early in their medical careers who exemplify a commitment to clinical excellence and collegiality and have made a significant impact in the clinical setting.

Mona Hinrichsen, M.D.

Hospital Medicine physician Mona Hinrichsen, M.D., of Marblehead, joined NSMC in 2013 and distinguished herself for her clinical judgment, attention to detail and collaborative leadership.


She was named Medical Director of Hospital Medicine in 2017, and has lead efforts to improve patient flow in the Emergency Department and develop important medical triage guidelines.

Adolfo Pena Salazar, M.D.

Hospital Medicine Physician Adolfo Pena Salazar, M.D., of Lynnfield, joined NSMC in 2016 and immediately distinguished himself as a gifted clinical leader.

 

He now serves as the Chief of Hospital Medicine where his accomplishments include streamlining patient flow on the medical service and improving the working conditions of overnight hospitalists.
