To mark the completion of the structural steel framing of its new building, North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) held a Topping Off Ceremony Thursday, July 6, at its Salem campus. Two beams representing NSMC’s Salem and Union hospitals and signed by hospital employees were raised into place during the ceremony.
“This is an exciting moment for the NSMC community and represents a significant milestone for a project that will benefit patients and families across the North Shore,” said NSMC President David Roberts, M.D. “When construction is complete in the fall of 2019, NSMC will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to provide a wide range of specialty and emergency care.”
NSMC broke ground last fall on its plan to consolidate medical, surgical and behavioral health services on one campus in Salem. The new building is part of a $207 million project that includes a new 64,000 square-foot Emergency Department with dedicated space for adult and pediatric care, 24 new private inpatient rooms and a 90-bed Behavioral Health Center in the former Spaulding Hospital.
Dr. Roberts was joined at the ceremony by Partners HealthCare CEO David Torchiana, M.D., local elected officials, including Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, NSMC donors, physicians, and staff and representatives of the project’s building and architectural teams.
The two beams that were installed bear the signatures and well wishes of NSMC employees from the Medical Center’s Salem and Union campuses. “These beams serve as a lasting tribute to our talented caregivers,” Dr. Roberts said, “and they complete the foundation for NSMC’s exciting future on the North Shore.”
