NSMC Nurses Honored by the Massachusetts Emergency Nurses Association
12/15/2015

Two of North Shore Medical Center's (NSMC) Emergency Department nurses were honored with 2015 State Council Awards at the Massachusetts Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) meeting.

Nancy Hassan, R.N., M.S.N., was presented with the Nurse Educator Award. This award honors an emergency nurse who has made significant contributions to the education of colleagues, patients and families.

Nancy, who resides in Peabody, has worked in the NSMC Emergency Department for three years. In that time, she has made it her goal to ensure that the emergency department staff is equipped with information that will enhance their critical thinking skills. She also played a key role in NSMC’s trauma recertification as a Level III Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons.
"Nancy is an integral part of our Emergency Department team at both NSMC Salem and Union Hospitals," says Jane Clarke, Executive Director of the NSMC Emergency Services. "She exemplifies the qualities, characteristics, competence, knowledge and confidence required of a respectful and professional nurse educator."

Mary Martel, B.S., R.N., C.E.N., was presented with the Behind the Scenes Award, which recognizes an individual who consistently supports Massachusetts ENA without expectation of recognition. Mary, who also serves on the board of the Massachusetts ENA, has worked in the NSMC Emergency Department for 44 years, having started as a new graduate.

As the Clinical Resource Nurse at NSMC, Mary wears many hats; serving as a staff nurse, preceptor of new nurses and staff educator. Beyond her work at NSMC she supports emergency nursing at the state level, and has been instrumental in deciding the educational programs the Massachusetts ENA develops to help nurses stay current in the care of emergency patients and their families.

"My involvement with ENA provides me with the resources I need to deliver the most up to date care to NSMC patients, and also enables me to serve as an advocate for them," says Mary, who resides in Peabody. "I am extremely blessed to go home every day feeling that I made a difference to someone, which is what drives me to do the work I do."

The Massachusetts ENA provides a unified voice for the interests of Massachusetts emergency nurses, leading the way in setting the standard of care for emergency patients, evidence based research to guide emergency care and the education of emergency nurses.
