NSMC Physicians and Nurses Recognized for Outstanding Performance

Salem, Mass. (September 2016) – North Shore Medical Center’s (NSMC) Department of Surgery has honored a number of its outstanding doctors and nurses with the 2016 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Award.  

The Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Award physician recipients were nominated by the nursing staff and other members of the unit-based care teams where the surgeons operate and care for hospitalized patients. Nursing recipients were nominated by the surgeons with whom they work. Nominations recognize surgeons and nurses who best exemplify professionalism and clinical excellence.

Physicians who received the 2016 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Awards include: 

Terence Doorly, M.D., a board certified neurosurgeon, has been a part of the medical staff at NSMC for 24 years and currently serves as associate chief of the department of neurosurgery. He is a graduate of the University of Dublin, Trinity College School of Medicine. He completed residencies in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, St. Lawrence’s Hospital in Ireland and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed his fellowship at Wellesley Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada. He resides in Marblehead. 

Ira Evans, III, M.D., a board certified orthopedic surgeon, has been on the medical staff at NSMC for 24 years. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Connecticut, Farmington. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Orthopedics Specialty Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah. He resides in Manchester.

Larry Goldberg, M.D., is a board certified surgeon specializing in vascular surgery, general and gastrointestinal surgery and wound treatment. He currently serves as associate chief of the department of general surgery and medical director for the department of trauma. He graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University. He completed his residency and fellowship at New England Medical Center. He resides in Swampscott. 

Wilfred Lewis, M.D., a board certified anesthesiologist who currently serves as vice chair of the department of anesthesia, has been in practice for 16 years. A graduate of St. John's Medical College in Bangalore, India, he completed his residency and fellowship in cardiac anesthesia at Brigham and Women's Hospital and was a clinical assistant professor in anesthesia at Yale University School of Medicine before moving to the North Shore. He resides in Middleton.

Joe Ordia, M.D., is board certified neurological surgeon and specializes in pain management. He has been on the medical staff at NSMC for 11 years. He graduated from the University of Ibadan Medical School in Nigeria and completed neurosurgery residencies at Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston City Hospital. He resides in Chestnut Hill. 

Douglas Peterson, D.O., a board certified orthopedic surgeon, has been a part of the medical staff at NSMC for six years. He is a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Grandview Hospital and Medical Center in Ohio. He completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He resides in Beverly.

Bojan Zoric, M.D., is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder. He graduated from the UCLA School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed a fellowship at Vail Valley Medical Center in California. He resides in Newburyport.

“This is the fifth year we’ve handed out these awards and there is never a shortage of deserving individuals,” explained Marc Rubin, M.D., NSMC Chair of Surgery. “These surgeons not only perform at exemplary levels in the operating room but outside of it as well, showing patients and their family’s compassion and kindness at all times.” 

North Shore Medical Center’s Department of Surgery also presented the 2016 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Awards for Nursing to the following recipients:

“Our nurses and surgical technicians are the backbone of much of the great work that goes on here. They possess the perfect mix of clinical judgment and compassion,” said Dr. Rubin. “They always put our patients first, showing them kindness and empathy through what can often be a challenging and emotional time.”

Department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient:

James Balcom, IV, M.D., was honored with the 2016 Department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Award. The recipient of this award is selected by the Massachusetts General Hospital surgical residents who complete training rotations at NSMC. They nominated the surgeon whose mentorship, teaching excellence and professionalism made the greatest positive impact during their time at NSMC. 

Dr. Balcom is a board certified vascular surgeon who currently serves as the medical director of the NSMC Advanced Wound Center. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Virginia Medical Center. He resides in Swampscott.
