NSMC News Releases
North Shore Medical Center’s (NSMC) Christian Semine, M.D., and the Partners Pediatric Integrated Care Management Program, led by NSMC’s Mark Mandell, M.D., were honored with Nesson Awards at the 2015 Partners Annual Meeting. These awards are named in honor of H. Richard Nesson, M.D., the first CEO of Partners HealthCare (PHS).
Dr. Semine, NSMC Chair of Radiology, was presented with the 2015 H. Richard Nesson, M.D. Award for Innovation based on his work on low dose lung cancer screening and managing and tracking patients with pulmonary nodules. Under the leadership of Dr. Semine, NSMC developed a lung cancer screening program for high-risk patients that uses a low dose CT scan.
The lung cancer screening program at NSMC evaluates patients who have a history of smoking with the hope and expectation that it will lead to the early detection of lung cancer in patients and result in better outcomes. Patients in this program also have the added benefit of a pulmonary nodule navigator who acts as an advocate and resource. The program is nationally accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
“It is truly gratifying to have Partners HealthCare recognize the innovative work we are doing here in the community,” says Dr. Semine. “Everyone who has been asked to help out in various capacities has done so willingly, and even enthusiastically, indicating to me the importance that everyone here at NSMC places on optimizing patient care.”
The Partners Pediatric Integrated Care Management Program team was presented with the 2015 H. Richard Nesson, M.D. Award for Collaboration based on their work developing a program designed to provide the highest quality, compassionate and efficient care to the most complex pediatric patients and their families.
“I am incredibly proud of our team, which includes nurse care managers, pediatric social workers, consulting pharmacists and community resource specialists. Throughout this process they have worked collaboratively and with all of our network pediatric practices to ensure the best care is delivered to our most complex pediatric patients,” says Dr. Mandell, medical director of the program and Chair of Pediatrics at North Shore Medical Center.
“On a daily basis, the team is helping families and practices with the unique challenges of meeting the needs of this vulnerable population. I am honored to help lead this outstanding and dedicated group of people.”
The Nesson Awards are given annually to Partners clinicians and their teams whose work exemplifies Dr. Nesson’s commitment to improving care. These awards showcase projects and programs that help fulfill the mission of enhancing both the provider-patient relationship and the clinicians’ experience through innovation in practice and collaboration among colleagues, practices and hospitals in pursuit of excellence.
