North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) honored Joseph P. Karpicz, M.D., M.P.H., and Howard M. Waldman, M.D., Ph.D., with the 2018 NSMC Department of Medicine Excellence in Medicine Award. NSMC Hospitalist Joseph Miaskiewicz, M.D., and NSMC President David J. Roberts, M.D, presented the awards at the 12th annual NSMC Department of Medicine Excellence in Medicine Awards annual dinner meeting and lecture in November.
The NSMC Department of Medicine Excellence Award was created in 2006 to recognize physicians who have made a significant contribution to patient care within the Department of Medicine.
Joseph P. Karpicz, M.D., M.P.H.
Hospitalist Dr. Karpicz, of Peabody, has been a mainstay of NSMC’s Hospitalist Service for more than a decade. Hospitalists oversee in-hospital care of patients admitted for a wide range of medical conditions. He was recognized for his devotion to patient care and clinical excellence, leading by example and earning the respect of his colleagues across NSMC.
Dr. Karpicz received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1990 and later completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester. He then returned to the University of Massachusetts to complete his master’s degree in Public Health.
Howard M. Waldman, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Waldman, of Swampscott, has personified excellence in patient care and medical practice at NSMC for nearly 30 years. As a key member of the cardiology collaboration between NSMC and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), he has been a leading force in developing an exceptional cardiology program on the North Shore. He currently serves as Chief of Cardiology and Medical Director of the NSMC Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
Dr. Waldman earned a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from Georgetown University. He attended medical school at SUNY Buffalo and completed his residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1987, Dr. Waldman completed a cardiology fellowship at MGH and joined the MGH interventional cardiology team, where he remains as a practicing member.
