NSMC presents second Annual Surgery Excellence Awards for Physicians and Nurses

North Shore Medical Center’s (NSMC) Department of Surgery has honored outstanding doctors and nurses with the 2013 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Award.

The Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Award physician recipients were nominated by the nursing staff and other members of the unit-based care teams where the surgeons operate and care for hospitalized patients. Nursing recipients were nominated by the surgeons with whom they work. 

Nominations recognize surgeons and nurses who best exemplify professionalism and clinical excellence.

The physicians who received the 2013 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Awards were: 

James Balcom, IV, M.D., a board-certified vascular surgeon, is a member of the Mass General/North Shore Surgery practice in Danvers, has been on the medical staff at NSMC for eight years. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Virginia Medical Center. He is a resident of Swampscott.

Noel DeFelippo, M.D., a board-certified urologist, is in practice with Urology Consultants of the North Shore in Salem and Mass General/North Shore Urology in Danvers, and has been a member of the medical staff at NSMC for 28 years. He is a graduate of Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed residencies at Beth Israel/Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. DeFelippo recently stepped down as chief of urology at NSMC. He is a resident of Swampscott.

Terence Doorly, M.D., a board-certified neurosurgeon, is in practice with North Shore Physicians Group Neurosurgery and Spine and has been on the medical staff of NSMC for 21 years. He is a graduate of the University of Dublin, Trinity College School of Medicine. He completed his residency and a fellowship in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. He is a resident of Marblehead.

Ira Evans, III, M.D., a board-certified orthopedist, is in practice with Sports Medicine North Orthopaedic Surgery in Peabody and has been on the medical staff at NSMC for 21 years. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Connecticut, Farmington. He completed a fellowship in orthopedic surgery at The Orthopedics Specialty Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is a resident of Manchester.

Mark LaSpina, D.O., a board-certified urologist, is in practice with Urology Consultants of the North Shore in Salem and has been on the medical staff at NSMC for three years. He is a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He began his residency in general surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and completed his urology residency at the State University of New York in Syracuse, New York. Originally from Methuen, he now resides in Georgetown.

Vinod Narra, M.D., a board-certified surgeon, is in practice with Essex Surgical Associates in Beverly and the Mass General/North Shore Surgery practice in Danvers. He has been on the NSMC medical staff for four years. He is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also completed fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is a resident of Lexington.

Douglas Peterson, D.O., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, is in practice with North Shore Center for Orthopedic Surgery in Salem and has been on the medical staff at NSMC for three years. He is a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Grandview Hospital and Medical Center. He completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is currently serving active duty in Afghanistan with the U.S. Navy and is a resident of Beverly.

Keith W. Rae, D.M.D., M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon, is in practice with MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center and Keith W. Rae, M.D., in Salem and has been on the medical staff at NSMC for 22 years. He is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital Dartmouth College. He completed his fellowship at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a resident of Marblehead.


Richard Goodenough, MD, was honored with the 2013 department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Award.

The Excellence in Teaching Award recipient was selected by the Massachusetts General Hospital surgical residents who complete training rotations through NSMC’s Salem and Union hospitals. They nominated the surgeon whose mentorship, teaching excellence and professionalism made the greatest positive impact during their time at NSMC.

Richard Goodenough, M.D., Chief of Vascular Surgery at NSMC, is a board-certified vascular and general surgeon and a member of the Mass General/North Shore Surgery practice in Danvers. He has been on the medical staff at NSMC for 28 years. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and completed two residencies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and fellowships at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a resident of Beverly.
