NSMC has received the prestigious John M. Eisenberg Award for Innovation in Patent Safety and Quality, health care’s top safety honor. This award was presented by The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum to a nationwide patient safety research group, of which NSMC was a part.

The award relates to the implementation of I-PASS in more than 50 hospitals across North America. I-PASS refers to interventions that standardize written and verbal communications during patient handoffs, either from shift to shift or from one service to another.

NSMC launched the I-PASS program last fall on the Davenport 8 and 9 floors and in the Intensive Care Unit on the Salem Hospital campus. Much of the early work was led by internal medicine residents, including Chief Resident Nuri Almaddah, M.D., and incoming Chief Resident Jasleen Minhas, M.D.
