On the morning of July 15, President Bob Norton, Senior Vice President of Operations Mary Jo Gagnon and Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll were joined by trustees, local officials, neighbors and project staff for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Later in the day, close to 400 staff members attended a special open house to get a glimpse inside the new state-of-the-art facility. 

Replacing the medical center’s nearly 100-year-old power plant, the new power plant was designed to generate cleaner, safer and more cost-efficient energy throughout the Salem Campus.

Employing computer-controlled steam boilers fired by natural gas, an advanced cogeneration system and duplicate electrical and communications feeds, the new utility plant will save money that can be redirected to patient care and reduce NSMC’s impact on the environment.

October update: NSMC's power plant receives Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
