NSMC's bariatric surgery success information and statistics.

NSMC's Surgical Weight Loss Center is the largest and most successful bariatric surgery program on the North Shore. Our gastric bypass and gastric banding surgeons perform more than 200 procedures each year. Our patients lose an average of 100 pounds in the first year after surgery and they experience reductions in heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and high cholesterol at levels that significantly exceed the national averages. For example:

  • 88% of patients with hypertension have been able to discontinue their medications.
  • 90% of diabetics were able to discontinue insulin or oral glycemic medications.
  • 92% of patients with sleep apnea were able to discontinue their CPAP one year after surgery.
  • 74% of patients who were completely sedentary before surgery now exercise two to four times per week.
  • Patients have reduced cholesterol levels by an average of 12.2%

Bariatric surgery information improves patient outcomes.

A significant factor in the success of NSMC's weight loss programs is the information, help and guidance patients receive before and after bariatric surgery. Before settling on a surgical approach, patients review information about all the procedures available to them with their surgeon. They have consultations with a cardiologist as well as with a fitness nurse and a nutritionist. They also have a psychiatric evaluation to assess their ability to comply with lifelong post-operative follow-up. Following gastric bypass surgery or a gastric banding procedure, patients receive comprehensive support that includes nutritional counseling, monthly support groups, medically supervised exercise, and information and instruction for cardiovascular risk reduction.
