Is it right for me?

Salem Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham, offers patients a variety of bariatric surgery options, enabling patient and surgeon to select the procedure that offers the best potential for long-term weight loss and health improvement.
  • Gastric bypass is a bariatric procedure where a portion of the stomach is stapled to create a small pouch, significantly reducing the size of the stomach. A portion of the small intestine is attached to this pouch, allowing food to bypass part of the intestinal track. The surgery promotes weight loss by reducing the amount of food a patient can consume.
  • Gastric banding is a surgery in which an inflatable band is positioned around the stomach to reduce its size, causing the patient to feel full faster and to not be hungry between meals. The gastric band surgeon can increase or decrease the size of the stomach based on the patient's weight loss goals and nutritional needs.
  • Sleeve gastrectomy, a bariatric surgery in which most of the stomach is removed, leaving a thin sleeve that limits the amount of food the patient can eat.
Prior to any type of bariatric surgery, patients meet with physicians to complete a full medical exam, a cardiac evaluation and a psychiatric evaluation to assess their physical and mental readiness for a life-changing procedure. Patients also receive comprehensive post-operative support, including nutrition counseling, medically supervised exercise, and instruction in stress management and cardiovascular risk reduction.
