Preparing for a Cardiac Test

Cardiac Ultrasound Registration

Salem Hospital

  • The Registration Department may call you at home to perform your registration for procedures.
  • Please enter the Salem campus using the lower entrance off of Highland Avenue. View campus map
  • Park in the upper parking lot. Once inside the main entrance, take the elevators on your left one floor up, to Davenport 5. Head right after you exit the elevator. The Diagnostic Cardiology department will be a short way down the hall, on the left.

Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care

  • Registration is at the front desk.

About The Procedure

  • Fasting is not necessary for this test. You may eat or drink before the procedure.
  • Please take your medication as prescribed by your physician.
  • The day of your exam you will be asked to disrobe from the waist up and to wear a hospital gown. For your convenience please wear a two piece outfit.
  • The complete procedure may take 30-60 minutes.

Stress Test Registration

About The Procedure

Resting Images --If your test is in the morning (before noon)

  • Please do not have any caffeine after midnight the night before your test. This includes not having any caffeinated or decaffeinated products such as coffee, tea, chocolate, soda. These products will interfere with the test and could result in having the test cancelled.
  • Please do not have anything to eat or drink except water after midnight the night before your appointment.
  • Please take your medications as prescribed by your physician. If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, check with your doctor about decreasing your dose on the day of the test because you will not be following a normal diet.
  • You are required to eat after your injection so please bring a snack with you.

If your test is in the afternoon (after noon)

  • Please do not have any caffeine after midnight the night before your test. This includes not having any caffeinated or decaffeinated products such as coffee, tea, chocolate, soda (coke, pepsi, etc). These products will interfere with the test and could result in having the test cancelled.
  • You may have water during the day and toast and juice up to four hours before your appointment.
  • Please take your medications as prescribed by your physician. If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, check with your doctor about decreasing your dose on the day of the test because you will not be following a normal diet.
  • You are required to eat after your injection so please bring a snack with you.

  • Please do not have anything to eat or drink, except water or juice after midnight the night before the test. This includes not having any caffeinated or decaffeinated products such as coffee, tea, chocolate, soda. These products interfere with the test and could result in having the test canceled.
  • Please take your medications as prescribed by your physician. If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, check with your doctor about decreasing your dose on the day of the test because you will not be following a normal diet.
  • You will be asked to eat after your test so please bring a snack with you. 
  • Please, bring a list of your medications. Please, no smoking at least 4 hours prior to the test.
  • Wear comfortable clothing suitable for walking or jogging. Loose fitting shorts, slacks, sweat pants, sneakers or walking shoes, NO HEELS!

Tilt Table Test Registration
  • Patients are pre-registered and the test takes place in the Catheterization Lab on Phippen 5, Salem campus.

About The Procedure

  • You should not have anything to eat after midnight.
  • Check with your physician about any medications you may need to take the night before testing occurs.
  • You will lie on a table which tilts upright.
  • You will be continually monitored via electrocardiogram.
  • Your blood pressure and heart rate will be checked frequently during the test.
  • The complete procedure may take one to two hours.
  • You will need to designate a driver to pick you up after your test is completed.

If you have a question regarding the procedure, you may call your physician's office. The results of the test will be discussed with you at the conclusion of the test, by the cardiologist.
