Preparing for a Cardiac Test

Cardiac Ultrasound Registration

  • The Registration Department may call you at home to perform your registration for procedures located on the NSMC Salem campus or the NSMC Union campus.
  • If you are registered over the phone, there is no need to arrive early for your exam. Report directly to the Cardiac Department at your schedule appointment time.
  • If your procedure is located on the NSMC Salem campus please enter through the valet parking entrance in the front of the building, located off of Highland Avenue. You will receive directions to the Cardiology Department or can complete registration at this entrance.
  • If your procedure is located on the NSMC Union campus please enter the building through the south entrance. As you enter the south entrance the Registration Department will be located on your right. You will receive directions to the Cardiology Department or can complete registration here. The south ground parking lot can be accessed by using the entrance located off of Lynnfield Street, found on the far right side of the hospital. Please drive behind the hospital using access located on the right side of the hospital.
  • Registration at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care is at the front desk.

About the procedure

  • Please take your medication as prescribed by your physician.
  • The day of your exam you will be asked to disrobe from the waist up and to wear a hospital gown. For your convenience please wear a two piece outfit.
  • In preparation for your procedure, please DO NOT eat or drink any caffeine products two hours prior to your appointment. This includes coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, etc.
  • The complete procedure may take 30-60 minutes.

Locations and Directions

This test is performed at NSMC Salem Hospital (in the Diagnostic Cardiology Department on Macomber 5) and at NSMC Union Hospital (in South 1). It is also performed at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care.


Holter Monitor/Event Monitor Registration

  • The Registration Department may call you at home to perform your registration for procedures located on the NSMC Salem campus or the NSMC Union campus.

  • You do not need to follow any special instructions for this test.
  • Please bring your insurance card to your appointment.

Stress Test Registration

  • If your procedure is located on the NSMC Union campus please enter the building through the south entrance. About the procedure

Resting Images --If your test is in the morning (before noon)

  • Please do not have any caffeine after midnight the night before your test. This includes not having any caffeinated or decaffeinated products such as coffee, tea, chocolate, soda (coke, pepsi, etc). These products will interfere with the test and could result in having the test cancelled.
  • Please do not have anything to eat or drink except water after midnight the night before your appointment. Please take your medications as prescribed by your physician. If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, check with your doctor about decreasing your dose on the day of the test because you will not be following a normal diet.
  • You are required to eat after your injection so please bring a snack with you. You may also go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast during the 45-minute wait between your injection and the imaging.

If your test is in the afternoon (after noon)

  • Please do not have any caffeine after midnight the night before your test. This includes not having any caffeinated or decaffeinated products such as coffee, tea, chocolate, soda (coke, pepsi, etc). These products will interfere with the test and could result in having the test cancelled.
  • You may have water during the day and toast and juice up to four hours before your appointment. Please take your medications as prescribed by your physician. If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, check with your doctor about decreasing your dose on the day of the test because you will not be following a normal diet.
  • You are required to eat after your injection so please bring a snack with you. You may also go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast during the 45-minute wait between your injection and the imaging. Stress Images

These products interfere with the test and could result in having the test canceled.
  • Please take your medications as prescribed by your physician. If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, check with your doctor about decreasing your dose on the day of the test because you will not be following a normal diet.
  • You will be asked to eat after your test so please bring a snack with you. You may also go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast during the 45-minute wait between your injection and the imaging.
  • Please, bring a list of your medications. Please, no smoking at least 4 hours prior to the test.
  • Wear comfortable clothing suitable for walking or jogging. Loose fitting shorts, slacks, sweat pants, sneakers or walking shoes, NO HEELS!

Tilt Table Test Registration

  • NSMC Salem Hospital. Patients are pre-registered and report directly to the Cath Lab on Phippen 5.

About the procedure

  • You should not have anything to eat after midnight.
  • Check with your physician about any medications you may need to take the night before testing occurs.
  • You will lie on a table which tilts upright.
  • You will be continually monitored via electrocardiogram.
  • Your blood pressure and heart rate will be checked frequently during the test.
  • The complete procedure may take one to two hours.
  • You will need to designate a driver to pick you up after your test is completed.

If you have a question regarding the procedure, you may call your physicians office. The results of the test will be discussed with you at the conclusion of the test, by the cardiologist.
