NSMC Presents Third Annual Surgery Excellence Awards for Physicians and Nurses

The Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Award physician recipients were nominated by the nursing staff and other members of the unit-based care teams where the surgeons operate and care for hospitalized patients. Nursing recipients were nominated by the surgeons with whom they work. 

Nominations recognize surgeons and nurses who best exemplify professionalism and clinical excellence.

 

The physicians who received the 2014 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Awards were: 

Matthew Capozzi DPM, AACFAS, CWS, is a board certified wound specialist and diplomat of the American Academy of Wound Management and an Associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He completed his residency in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center in Hartford, CT. He treats patients with complex foot wounds in the Advanced Wound Center at NSMC Salem Hospital and is in private practice at Peabody Podiatry.  He currently resides in Danvers.

Terence P. Doorly, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon, is in practice with North Shore Physicians Group Neurosurgery and Spine and has been on the medical staff of NSMC for 21 years. He is a graduate of the University of Dublin, Trinity College School of Medicine. He completed his residency and a fellowship in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. He is a resident of Marblehead.

Mark LaSpina, DO is a board-certified urologist, is in practice with Urology Consultants of the North Shore in Salem and has been on the medical staff at NSMC for five years. He also has an office in Newburyport, MA. He is a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He began his residency in general surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and completed his urology residency at the State University of New York in Syracuse, New York. Originally from Methuen, he now resides in Georgetown.

William V. Kastrinakis, MD, William Kastrinakis, MD, is a board certified general surgeon.  He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is chief of General Surgery at North Shore Medical Center. He currently resides in Beverly.

Robert M. Wood, MD, is board certified and completed a dual fellowship in surgery of the foot and ankle as well as hip and knee reconstruction. He graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at The University of Alberta. He practices at Sports Medicine North and currently resides in Newburyport.

Bojan B. Zoric, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder. He is an expert in repair and reconstruction of cartilage, ligaments, and tendons and in arthroscopic surgery of the hip joint. He is a team physician for the US Women’s National Soccer Team and an active member of the US Ski and Snowboard Association physician pool. He attended UCLA School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Harvard University. He practices at Sports Medicine North and currently resides in Newburyport.

Richard Goodenough, MD, was honored with the 2014 Department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Award. The Excellence in Teaching Award recipient was selected by the Massachusetts General Hospital surgical residents who complete training rotations through NSMC’s Salem and Union hospitals. They nominated the surgeon whose mentorship, teaching excellence and professionalism made the greatest positive impact during their time at NSMC.

Dr. Goodenough, Chief of Vascular Surgery at NSMC, is a board-certified vascular and general surgeon and a member of the surgery practice at the MassGeneral/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. He has been on the medical staff at NSMC for 29 years. Dr. Goodenough is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and completed two residencies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and fellowships at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a resident of Beverly.

“Young surgeons are always learning and taking in new information every day.” said Marc Rubin, M.D., NSMC Chair of Surgery. “The best teachers know how to lead by example, and teach others to harness and perfect skills to be able to perform at exemplary levels.”
