The following are examples of volunteer assignments available at our Salem and Lynn campuses.

--Patient Care Related Assignments--
Critical Care Reception
Act as a liaison between visitors and nursing staff in the Intensive Care Unit and Recovery Room. Provide comfort to those waiting to visit a family member. Facilitate visitations between families and patients.
Emergency Department liaison
Greet patients and families who arrive at the Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment. Act as a liaison between the Emergency Department staff and patient/families. Provide information and comfort to patients, families and visitors.
Pediatric Literacy Program
Read to children in our outpatient waiting areas as they are waiting to be seen by a clinician or physician. Be a role model for parents by encouraging them to read to their children and offering them a “gently used” book to take home.
Surgicenter
Provide snacks and blankets to patients in the lounge recovery area. Transport patients to their cars upon discharge and perform light clerical duties.
--Non-Patient Care Assignments--
Gift Shops
Work as a cashier/stockperson in our gift shops. Cash register experience is helpful, but not necessary. Training will be provided.
Information Desk
Greet visitors and and help them find where they want to go and direct them there. Provide patient condition reports to callers.
Medical Library
Shelve books, photocopy articles from journals for medical residents. Provide other library functions as skills allow.
Office/Clerical
Provide office assistance such as filing, light typing, data entry, answering phones, reception work, or assistance with mailings.

--Patient Care Assignments--
Volunteer Greeters
Greet patients and visitors as they arrive for services throughout the hospital; volunteers may direct or escort patients to appropriate locations.
EKG Greeter
Greet patients, assist with office work, and escort patients to other areas of hospital, as needed.
Emergency Department Greeter
Greet patients and families who arrive at the Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment. Act as a liaison between the Emergency Department staff and patient/families. Provide information and comfort to patients, families and visitors.
Nursing Unit Volunteer
Assist staff with errands, office work and patient requests.
Patient Representatives
Make friendly visits to patients and survey patients regtarding their stay at NSMC.
SurgiCenter
Volunteer Provide comforts to patients in the recovery area, such as snacks, blankets, etc. Transport patients to their cars upon discharge and perform light clerical duties.
